Engineering Design: Unlocking Concept to Functional Product Design

A customer, we have worked with for the last couple of years, reached out after devising a new product concept. They needed help with the engineering design. They knew what the product needed to do and dimensionally its shape and size. But they were unsure how it needed to be designed from an engineering and manufacturing perspective. With the potential to develop a new to market product for their industry. A functioning and manufacturable design was the critical first step in their research and development process.

Collaborating on new product design with an engineering focus

A customer operating in a niche industry, as a user of the product range in question, devised a new component concept. As they used these items day-in, day-out they identified an opportunity to design a new multi-tool to streamline their kit-sets. Whilst they knew what the tool needed to do functionally and what it need to look like dimensionally. They did not have the expertise to design it from an engineering perspective, with a view to having it manufactured. This is where the FJH Group engineering team stepped in. One of our qualified mechanical engineers met with the customer, to discuss working with them on the design process. They consulted and collaborated with the customer’s team, to first understand the full remit of the application, going on to design the first iteration of this new tool. With our engineers using the first facet of our 3 pronged applications support offering. As this is still an open project, we are unable to share much in the way of further detail. But the intent is FJH Group will go on to support the subcontract manufacture of prototypes and final design production.

The research and development process

We previously worked with this company on redesigning one of their products which had been copied by a competitor. They demonstrated their confidence in the level of support they received from the team at FJH Group by coming back to us, to collaborate on their new innovation. For example, using their previous product to demonstrate the process. Beyond the design phase, we utilised 3D printing to rapidly provide iterations of the design for them to test in the field. With the validation process a success, we consequently went on to supply, and continue to provide, sub-contract manufacturing for this product. Furthermore, by offering our client a comprehensive end-to-end engineering design and manufacturing solution. Our support services have as a result opened avenues for them to continue to innovate and bring new products to market.
